This project, developed during the residency, consists of a series of digital collages, assemblages and paintings that explore the construction of a new identity as well as an exploration, using the mask as a costume/skin made of make-believe attempts, the makeshift costume of the mask as a performance, the mise en scene while looking for fragmentation and recontextualization uisng techniques as painting, AR and VR to explore the act of imagemaking from that point of view.

The Journeyman 1 and 2

A masked character travels in a alien enviroment , exploring different sensations and trying to forge new links and made sense of the new experience exploring an imaginary city where the city becomes the world. Here the exploration of nostalgia, let spill some historical references of Peru in particular and LatAm in general.

Traditional and digital interpretations of natural forms, exploring the intersection between organic structures and geometric patterns.

Computer-generated artworks exploring the intersection of mathematics and visual aesthetics and digital interpretations of natural forms, exploring the intersection between organic structures and geometric patterns.

Retablo

A series of small “mise en scene” exploring images of the subcon-scious from the construction of the identity to the hidden realities of the mind through surrealist scenes. The figures were de-stroyed after the photography was taking, being the record, the photo used in the collages and assem-blages the ony thing that remains of the figurines, exploring at the same time the nature of the image as presence and vestige as well as creation and ideation.

CV / Biography

German Fernandez Cantos was born in Lima, Peru, graduated from the Faculty of Art of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru as graphic designer and artist. As a designer, he has been part of award-winning projects with the Al Bayan and DMI infographic teams. As an artist, he has participated in exhibitions in UAE, Peru and India, as well as having two solo shows at FN Designs gallery in 2013 and 2016 at the cultural district of Alserkal Avenue as well as being artist-in-residence at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation in 2024. In his work he seeks to explore in his works the themes of identity and communication through characters who appear masked, disguised or entangled in structures drawn in surreal and unknown environments, trying to capture vignettes of contemporary life in each scene. He participated in Sikka previously, in the 2014 edition, co-curated by Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum and the Japanese architect Kayoko Iemura. This year at Sikka -curated by Maktoum Al Maktoum- he is part of the project WindSails in collaboration with the Lebanese artist Ghada Mehdi. Currently lives and works in Dubai, as consultant in the field of information graphics and data visualization.
